Kinetic Typography - Motion Graphics Project
2024
Designed and created by:

BRIEF
Rather than an experimental project that focuses on just interesting movements, this project focuses on a narrative that brings typography to life by mimicking reality, and building a narrative of our experience at GDC.
This element of realism makes typography feel alive through using the principles of animation, principles that were introduced by two of Disney's Nine Old Men, Ollie Johnston & Frank Thomas. These principles seen in Disney's animated movies prove their success by having their characters and even inanimate objects full of life by following these principles.
12 Principles of animation
Below are some exercises we had done to properly understand the environment of After Effects. We experimented the 3D space by adding a camera to create depth within 2D objects, to making balls bounce, and changing the velocity of the balls bouncing at each given moment to bring them to life.
Prompts
Our experience at GDC:
- Anxious & Stressed - Because of the workload and pressure to do well
- Anxious & Stressed - Because of the workload and pressure to do well
- Frustrated - Because coming up with concepts has been challenging
- Excited - Because of the opportunities to learn and grow
- Excited - Because of the opportunities to learn and grow
We decided to pick the following prompts to apply to the narrative:
- Erratic - For anxiety & stress
- Erratic - For anxiety & stress
- Explosive - For frustration
- Bold - For confidence and excitement
The narrative would play out as:
- G: Erratic
- G: Erratic
- D: Explosive
- C: Bold
CONCEPT 1
The idea would be to morph the letter G into the ridges of a brain, and have them wiggle and eventually dissolve/explode because of the pressure.
Principles of animation used for this animation were:
- Secondary Action
- Ease in, Ease out
- Exaggeration
- Timing
- Appeal
- Pose to Pose
- Squash & Stretch
- Solid Drawing
Concept 2
The idea here to represent frustration is to show blocks that build up D where the final block did not fit into place immediately like the other blocks, like a wrong puzzle piece.
Principles of animation used for this animation were:
- Follow through
- Ease in, Ease out
- Timing
- Appeal
- Pose to Pose
- Solid drawing
- Arcs
- Anticipation
- Staging
Concept 3
The idea here is to portray determination and confidence through perseverance. C acts as a balloon, and a mouse cursor trying to catch it but missing a few times, then finally catching the C, creating an explosion on click and a bold C extruding out of it.
Principles of animation used for this animation were:
- Secondary Action
- Ease in, Ease out
- Exaggeration
- Timing

- Pose to Pose
- Squash & Stretch
